Since 1997, the Quebec Branch of the Canadian Bar Association has offered a program about human rights in secondary schools.
The program, geared principally to the Secondary IV and V levels, introduces students to concepts relating to human rights. The program also includes a mock trial exercise, which gives students a chance to argue a human rights case. Over the course of four or five class periods, students learn about the basic principles underlying our democratic society. Lawyers and judges are involved in the mock trial exercise.
Over the past several years, the program has been offered in Montreal, Laval, the North Shore of Montreal, Quebec City and the Laurentians, and in the Lanaudière, Montérégie and Outaouais regions.
